Giens, vesnička ležící na polostrově jižně od města Hyéres si zachovala svůj typický provensálský ráz místní produkcí a pravidelnými trhy. Historickou památkou ze sedmnáctého století je starobylá tvrz a věž Fondue. Kostel sv. Petra byl postaven v roce 1880 na místě staré kaple. Giens býval dříve ostrovem v pravém slova smyslu, s pevninou je spojen dvěma paralelními písčinamy zvanými tombolo, mezi nimiž se nacházejí laguny využívané k těžbě soli. Les Salins d´Hyéres se dělí na dva mokřady: Staré Saliny (les Vieux salins) a saliny Pesquiers.Kromě toho, že jsou krajinou výjimečné krásy poskytují útočišně více než 200 druhům ptáků a 300 druhům rostlin. Tuto oblast spravuje a udržuje Toulon Provence Méditerranée.
Saliny si zachovaly svůj vzácný ráz, podávají svědectví o výrobě soli, která se zde získávala od roku 963 n.l do roku 1995. V 19. století staré saliny byly jediným výrobcem soli v této oblasti.Saliny Pesquiers jsou mnohem mladší a zažily éru mechanizace. Z důvodu konkurence produkce v Camargue, produkce v Hyéres postupně klesala a vznikl zde prostor určený pro ochranu fauny a flóry. V průběhu roku se zde konají prohlídky s průvodcem „stopy minulosti“, kdy se kromě pozorování ptáků seznámíte s historií těžby soli. Počet osob je však omezený a rezervace předem je nutná.
Vesnička žije svou jedinečnou atmosférou. Návštěva pravidelných úterních trhů se stává nezapomenutelným zážitkem, kdy procházíte mezi stánky,kde prodejci nabízejí nejrůznější zboží. Máte jedinečnou příležitost ochutnat čerstvé olivy, fíky, ovoce, zeleninu, místní potraviny, koření, tapenády.
Pokud budete pobývat v Giens koncem června, budete mít možnost se zúčastnit svátku Sv. Petra, kdy se krojovaný průvod nesoucí sošky svatého Petra vydává po bohoslužbě do přístavu Port du Niel, kde probíhá před polednem požehnání květinami vyzdobeným lodím. Někteří účastníci průvodu se na těchto lodí vydávají na moře a po obědě se ve vesnici koná přehlídka tanců.
Pobyt v Giens doporučujeme rodinám s dětmi, protože jsou zde písečné pláže a mělké moře. Vesnička je velmi klidná, nejsou zde žádné velké hotely, nabízí se pouze ubytování v soukromých apartmánech a několika velmi dobře vybavených kempech vzdálených cca 500 m od pláže. V kempu La Presqu´île de Giens je k dispozici restaurace a malý supermarket. V sezoně máte možnost shlédnout i kabaretní vystoupení s tanečnicemi kankánu. V sousedním kempu L´ille d´Or je možnost nákupu pečiva a je zde také malá restaurace. Kemp je velmi dobře vybaven a personál na recepci je velmi příjemný ochotný poradit a pomoci .
Giens, a village situated on the peninsula south of Hyères, has retained its Provencal character by local production and regularly held fairs. The historic monument of the seventeenth century is the ancient fortress and the Fondue tower. Church of St. Petra was built in 1880 on the site of an old chapel. It is worth a visit when you come in, you can admire the shimmering colors on the ceiling reminiscent of the starry sky.
The atmosphere of the Port di Niel and the Mandrague will take you to the typical southern France environment among fishermen. If you take a long coastal trip, you will appreciate the small seaside coves. In the autumn, the Salt Path becomes a promenade for pedestrians and a cycle path. Giens used to be an island in the true sense of the word, now it is connected with the mainland by two parallel sands banks called the tombolo, among which are lagoons used for salt mining. Les Salins d’Hyéres is divided into two wetlands: the Old Salines (Vieux Salins) and the Pesquiers Salines. Besides being a landscape of exceptional beauty, they provide more than 200 species of birds and 300 species of plants. This area is managed and maintained by Toulon Provence Méditerranée.

The village lives in its unique atmosphere. A visit to regular Tuesday fairs becomes an unforgettable experience when you go through the stands where vendors offer a variety of goods. You have a unique opportunity to taste fresh olives, figs, fruits, vegetables, local food, spices, tapenadas.
If you stay at Giens at the end of June, you will have chance to see the feast of St. Pier, when a crowd dressed in local costumes carrying St. Peter’s statues sets off after a religious service towards the Port du Niel , where before noon blessings come for ships decorated with flowers. Some procession participants emerge on the sea on these ships, and after lunch there is held a dance show in the village.
Staying in Giens is recommended to families with children because there are sandy beaches and shallow sea. The village is very quiet, there are no big hotels, only private apartments and several well-equipped camps are located about 500 m from the beach. „La Presqu’île de Giens“ camp offers a restaurant and a small supermarket. In summer season, you can also watch cabaret performances with cancan dancers here. In the nearby „L’ille d’Or“ camp it is possible to buy baguettes and French bread in the morning and there is also a small restaurant. The campsite is very well equipped and the staff at the reception is very nice and helpful.
